Role of the Governing Body

The role of the Governing Body is to act as a strategic leader of the school. The law states that the Governing Body should “conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school”. In all types of schools, governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
• Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; this aspect of the role is often described as being a “critical friend”
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

 All Governors are volunteers and include parents, staff and members of the local community. Governors are not involved in the day-to-day running of the school which is the responsibility of the Headteacher. At BPS we have two committees through which Governors conduct much of their work:

• Curriculum and Standards
• Resources
