Curriculum Intent

At Buckingham Primary School, we have designed a high quality Physical Education and Sports curriculum which aims to inspire, challenge and motivate all children to fulfil their potential. Our PE topics have been specifically chosen to ensure a broad, balanced and rich curriculum which exposes children to a range of skills and knowledge.

We believe that every child’s experience of PE should be positive and encouraging, enabling them to become physically confident and literate.

We aim to ensure all children feel included and able to succeed and excel in both competitive, non-competitive, team and individual sports as well as physical activities.

We hope that, through the range of sporting opportunities provided, we embed a love of fitness which will support our children’s social, emotional, physical and educational needs, providing the foundations for a long and active life.

Implementation

At Buckingham Primary School, we create a culture where the high quality of teaching and learning inspires pupils to engage in physical activity.  PE is taught through The Primary Planning scheme of work, which ensures the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met whilst providing clear success criteria for each lesson enabling staff to identify skills acquisition and assess pupil’s progression.

Each child receives 2 hours of PE a week with either specialist coaches or class teachers. All lessons are inclusive and provide differentiated levels of challenge so all children can participate in tasks which provide personal achievement and promote success. Many of these lessons promote collaborative teamwork, resilience, reflection and embeds the values of fairness and respect.

The sequence of the lessons builds upon children’s fundamental skills and provides children with a clear progression of knowledge from F2 through to Year 6; giving them the opportunity for application within competitive situations. Through the sequence of work, children are given the opportunity to practice, develop and apply a broad range of skills where each lesson builds upon their previous learning enabling children to know more and remember more.

In Year 5, pupils attend swimming lessons at Swan pool where they learn to swim 25 metres competently and confidently in a range of strokes.

Children also have the chance to be active in wide range of clubs both during lunchtimes and after school which are run by both teaching staff and outside agencies such as Sports 4 All. These clubs provide children with access to a wide range of sporting activities which are chosen by pupils through class votes and pupil voice to ensure the clubs are successful and popular.  Our all-inclusive festivals also ensure that all pupils who wish to participate in competitive games have the opportunity to do so. A range of inter and intra events run throughout the school year, giving children opportunities to take part in competitive sports.

We aim to inspire pupils by exposing them to a range of sporting professions. Welcoming MK Dons and Chance to Shine cricket coaches as well as professional athletes helps to not only inspire but also to motivate pupils.

Impact

Drawing together evidence from lesson observations, pupil voice, staff feedback and assessment data we are able to make informed decisions regarding pupil’s development of skills and knowledge.

Children leave Buckingham Primary school being able to complete all basic physical tasks such as catching, running and throwing.  Our curriculum is designed to prepare children for secondary school; they have been taught skills/sports that they can choose to specialise in at KS3.  Children understand how to lead healthy and balanced lifestyles as they move into secondary school.

Aims

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop their fundamental movement skills
  • improve their physical literacy
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • enjoy fitness and understand the importance of good diet and exercise
  • are engaging in competitive sport and activities

Development of skill

EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin to improve their movement skills. At the beginning of the year, teachers begin to develop pupil’s agility, balance and coordination. Throughout the year, the skills leant then progress to incorporate ball skills.

Key stage 1

Pupils continue to develop their movement skills. They extend their agility, balance and coordination and engage in competitive and cooperative physical activities. These include team games, dance and gymnastics.

Key stage 2

Pupils will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as: running, jumping, throwing and catching. They do this through a range of activities including: ball games (where they can apply the basic principles for attacking and defending), athletics, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor adventure. They will use these skills in competitive games and performances. In addition, they will also evaluate their own and others’ work through effective communication and in collaboration with each other. Pupils will learn how to improve in physical activities and there will be many chances for children to take part in competitions in school and against other schools.

Swimming and water safety – KS2

We will provide swimming lessons in Year 5 where pupils will be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

For any children who do not achieve this in Year 5, we will provide additional lessons in Year 6.
